Just a few of the good friends you can make when you volunteer at MCPAWS!

Volunteer Information
Volunteer Coordinator:
mcpawsvolunteer@frontiernet.net

We invite you to join our team of volunteers! As a non-profit organization, we rely heavily upon volunteers for help with the operation of
MCPAWS Regional Animal Shelter. Volunteers of any age, ability or  interest can become a valuable asset in some aspect of our organization.

Applications are available at the shelter or will be sent as an attachment by e-mail. Fill out the application and turn it into the front desk at MCPAWS, or mail to: MCPAWS, P.O. Box 1375, McCall, ID 83638. The Volunteer Coordinator will get in touch with you to make an appointment for a Basic Orientation and Interview.
A Basic Orientation is necessary before you can work with the animals. This will introduce you to the layout of the shelter, show you where things are, teach you how to take animals out of the shelter for their exercise, how to clean up afterwards. We stress safe cat and dog handling and sanitation. The Volunteer Coordinator or an experienced volunteer will be glad to work with you in your initial visits. MINORS (10-16 years old) must have an adult volunteer accompany them when they work with the animals.
After basic orientation, the Volunteer Coordinator will interview you about a schedule when you can come in to be with the animals or assist in other ways. Running a shelter takes a tremendous amount of volunteer help, and even if you don't care to be with the animals, we would still love to have your assistance in a myriad other ways, including special events scheduled throughout the year.

And here are a few more...

Volunteer Positions

Animal Ambassadors
(Tuesday-Saturday, Noon-4:00p.m.; other days/hours as arranged by Volunteer Coordinator)
Animals need socialization and exercise. The Animal ambassadors can walk and play with the dogs, socialize and groom cats in the cat room. This not only improves the animal's life in the shelter, but helps make the shelter pets more adoptable.

Volunteer Friday
(Office, Tuesday-Saturday, noon-2:00p.m.)
With only one person at the front desk as the
MCPAWS receptionist, it is important to have another person available in that area when an animal comes in to be surrendered, or when someone wants to adopt a pet. There are also many needs in the office that will help our staff while you are here.

Remote Adoptions
(Ongoing as scheduled by shelter staff and volunteers)
Remote Adoptions give the community a chance to see our pets outside the shelter. These are often at a local bank or store, or at special events. We have "Adopt Me" vests for the dogs to wear which help identify the
MCPAWS animals.

Special events
"
Bark in the Park" in June, "Auction for the Animals" dinner gala in July, "Santa Paws" in December, Winter Carnival Mardi Gras Parade and Monster Dog Pull in January, are a few of the events that are successful because of our dedicated volunteers. We always need our faithful and new volunteers for these events.

More still...

Other Needs
Throughout the year, MCPAWS needs volunteers for special projects. We have two newsletters and additional special mailings. Volunteers can help mend fences, kennels, or cages. Volunteers put up/take down posters around town advertising animals we have available for adoption. The needs change daily and seasonally-- volunteers who can be 'on call' to help are always appreciated!

Orientation schedule

Please contact MCPAWS (208-634-3647) or e-mail the volunteer coordinator (mcpawsvolunteer@frontiernet.net) if you would like to attend a volunteer orientation at the shelter. Orientations for 2008 will be held on the 2nd Saturday and 4th Wednesday of each month. Applications can be picked up at MCPAWS during shelter hours, Tuesday-Saturday, noon-4p.m.

Volunteers will be given training in caring for dogs and cats as well as Clicker Training for dogs.  After orientation, new volunteers will be asked to commit at least 2 times per month to practice what they have learned and to work with MCPAWS staff and other volunteers. Volunteer hours are Tuesday-Saturday, noon-4PM.

Let's face it-- you always have friends
when you volunteer at
MCPAWS!

Spend a little time...
Have the time of your life!

All of the functions of this organization are accomplished by an Executive Director, volunteer Board of Directors, an elected slate of officers, and the volunteer members of its committees. Individuals who can offer professional expertise, or are interested in helping with a special event are encouraged to participate. A little bit of your own time and a sincere desire to help are the only qualifications required to become a volunteer.

We hold a MCPAWS meeting on the first Wednesday of every month, 5:30 PM, at the McCall Fire Station or upstairs at the shelter (call MCPAWS for meeting location, 634-3647). This meeting is open to the public, and MCPAWS members and volunteers are encouraged to attend to keep up-to-date on shelter happenings.
